Trekking bm559-600 -> day 3: 597-600

previous trip      next trip

Summary: part of a series of 5 daytrips and one 3-days backpacking trip in april 2023.

This is day 6 and the third day of the 3-days hike from bm559 to 600. Most of these markers I have done at least 10 years ago and that is the reason to do them again.

Today: last part of my 3-days trekking, wind still very strong, threatening fire in France, 'evacuated' by Carlos & Conchita

Weather: bright sun, wind very strong

The end of this trip also to be seen at Carlos & Conchita's website.

Awakening with a bright sun and strong wind.

Although the wind kept raging through the night, I sleep fairly warm and well.

This gif-animation (conversion of a video) shows the windswept trees and bushes around my sleeping spot.
Back on the track again.

I have little water left but it's not far to bm600 where I will be picked up by Carlos & Conchita.

In the background the hilltop of  Torre de Querroig.

Then climbing to the Torre de Querroig but the trail passes well underneath the top with the ruins of a castle.

Very strong winds on the ridge.

which also shows the borderline.

There have been plans to create four intermediate bordermarkers at the top but the project was abandoned.

See this page for more information.

Then descending on a long, rocky path to Coll de la Farella.

Just beyond the Coll is bm598

Now progress gets faster on the dirtroad.

In the early morning I already got a message from Carlos Roca that there is a fire in France.

Now I can see the smoke over the hills, drifting to the S,

(click photo to enlarge)
and already over the sea.

I continue to bm599.

The Col des Balistres (bm600) comes in sight, that is where I will meet Carlos & Conchita.

The smoke is already covering the hillridge.

Close to bm600, Carlos comes to meet me.

Bm600, with - from left to right - Conchita, their friend Emma and Carlos.

We wanted to walk together to bm601 but now it's too smokey and risky because the fire is rapidly moving to the south.

Later I wil hear that the fire reached the borderline in the afternoon.

So we escape the danger zone and drive to La Vajol to pick up my car and to visit bm559 to show Emma - being possibly an apprentice in bordermarkers - another example.

Then we have a late and delicious lunch in Perelada.

We say goodbye and I drive to the tranquil camping Maureillas to enjoy a day of rest tomorrow.

I am content. Despite the difficult conditions and long days, I can still handle a multiday backpacking trip in the mountains.
