Robert Darrieumerlou shows an interesting picture on this page
with another picture- more in detail - on this page.

It seems the remnants of a rectangle in which the cross and number might have been destroyed.

This picture shows where Robert found the rectangle.

It makes a re-visit worthwhile some day.

It's ± 175m NNE of the supposed location of the original bm297.
This bordermarker was installed in 1977 or 1978 - meant as a replacement for the disappeared cross 297 - together with three other unnumbered intermediate markers between bm297-299.

However: carrying no alphanumeric indication, they don't qualify for my counting of all bordermarkers.

Placing extra bm's between bm297 and 298 was already discussed in 1898-1900 but to no result. Jacques Koleck found some letters about this matter in the archives. The mayor of Cette-Eygun asked for two intermediate bordermarkers to better demarcate the long stretch of pastures between bm297 and 298. French and Spanish shepherds often had disputes and fights over the exact borderline.

The current intermediate markers were placed much later: in 1978-79. There's no treaty involved, the operation being validated in 1985 (31/1 and 7/2) by an exchange of letters between France and Spain. See the treaties-page.
